Safety: what official sources say

The UK Foreign Office (FCDO) does not advise against travel to any part of Namibia (checked 3 October 2026)

Why Namibia

  • English is the official language (Constitution, Article 3), so signs and services are easy to navigate
  • Very low population density: 3.02 million people in a large country, with plenty of space and quiet
  • A welcoming attitude toward citizens of the former USSR (confirmed by our partners' practice)

What to keep in mind

  • In central Windhoek, muggers target tourists, sometimes in daylight. Take care after dark, use hotel safes and book taxis rather than hailing them (FCDO).
  • Theft from vehicles at busy junctions and service stations is common. Keep doors locked and do not leave the car unattended at fuel stops (FCDO).
  • Gravel roads cause many accidents. The FCDO advises no more than 80 km/h on gravel in the rainy season (January to April) and no night driving outside towns because of wildlife and livestock. See our driving guide.
  • Malaria is present in 10 of 14 regions, mostly in the north; there is none in Windhoek. See our malaria guide.
