Fish River Canyon: Season, Viewpoints, the Trail and How to Get There, Namib Passage

Fish River Canyon in southern Namibia is one of the largest canyons in the world: about 160 km long, up to 27 km wide and roughly 550 m deep. The Fish River carved it, and the view from the lookouts is the highlight of any route south.

When to go

The best period is May to September: cool and dry. From October to April it is hot, with temperatures up to 40°C. The viewpoints stay open all year, but the hiking trail is closed.

Where to see the canyon

  • Hobas. The main and most accessible entrance to the park. The gate, campsite and chalets are here, and the main viewpoints, including Hiker's Point, start from this side. The entrance and vehicle fees are paid at the Hobas gate.
  • Ai-Ais. A resort at the canyon base with hot springs, thermal pools, a spa and rooms. A 4x4 is recommended for the roads to Ai-Ais.

How to get there

  • About 160 km from Keetmanshoop.
  • About 700 km from Windhoek, a drive of 7–8 hours, usually split with an overnight stop.
  • About 680 km from Cape Town to the Vioolsdrift border post.

The Fish River hiking trail

A multi-day route of about 85 km, taking 4–5 days. The trail is open from 1 May to 15 September; the rest of the year is too hot. Conditions:

  • a group of at least three people;
  • mandatory booking through NWR (Namibia Wildlife Resorts), made well in advance, several months ahead;
  • registration at Hobas, near Hiker's Point;
  • finish at Ai-Ais;
  • a demanding route that requires fitness and a medical clearance.

Fitting it into a route

Fish River Canyon fits naturally after Sossusvlei: south, then back to Windhoek or across into South Africa. We build routes around your dates. Days on the road, nights at Hobas or Ai-Ais and the choice between the viewpoints and the multi-day trail are discussed at the first free consultation.
