Personal Bank Account in Namibia for Foreigners: Documents and Steps, Namib Passage

A personal account in Namibia is needed by people who live here or do business here: for rent, shopping, salary and company-related payments. Here are the steps and what to prepare.

Banks

The main banks are Bank Windhoek, FNB, Standard Bank and Nedbank. Each has its own internal requirements and its own practice with foreign clients. Terms for non-residents differ between banks, so it is easier to clarify them before you arrive.

Documents

The basic set for a foreign individual:

  • a valid foreign passport (FNB accepts a passport as proof of identity for foreign nationals);
  • proof of immigration status, if you have it: a visa or residence permit;
  • proof of residential address;
  • a tax number, if already obtained;
  • an initial deposit, the amount of which depends on the bank and account type.

Passport copies can be certified by a commissioner of oaths, or the originals can be presented to a bank officer who verifies and copies them.

The exact list is set by the bank itself. It is easier to confirm it in writing before the visit.

In-person visit

In many cases the bank asks you to come to a branch in person to verify documents. That is why opening an account fits well with a trip: a business tour gives time for in-person meetings with banks and partners.

What to prepare in advance

  1. Your passport and certified copies.
  2. Proof of address.
  3. Proof of source of funds (statements, letters) if the bank requests them.
  4. A choice of bank: compare account and transfer fees.
  5. Time for the visit: allow a few hours at the branch.

International transfers

SWIFT transfers usually take several business days. Fees depend on the bank. Since Namibia left the FATF grey list in June 2026, the terms of international settlements are discussed with the bank case by case: see Namibia exits the FATF grey list.
